Sussing Out Your Sixth Sense

What we commonly refer to as our "sixth sense" goes by many different names: gut feeling, inner voice, instinct, intuition, subconscious. Regardless of which term you prefer to use, this sixth sense is not some magical or mystical power that only a few people are blessed enough to possess; rather, it is as common and natural as the other five senses we automatically accept as being valid and real because of our experience.

Theories about Intuition
One of the most common ways in which people "explain" intuition is to relate it to the scientific understanding of energy. For instance, we know from the Law of Conservation of Energy that energy can be neither created nor destroyed; as such, everything that exists in the universe is energy in some form. Moving to a more metaphysical understanding of this concept, we can see that all human interaction – whether physical or mental – is essentially interaction between and among different energies. In this way we can sense the energy that surrounds us with our bodies as well as the energy of every situation we visualize with our minds – and THAT is how our sixth sense manifests. An awareness of the reactions of either/and our bodies or minds – no matter how subtle – to those we meet and the situations in which we find ourselves can lead to an accurate understanding and interpretation of the meaning of these reactions.

Others describe this sixth sense as our ability to tap into "universal knowledge." Similarly to those who subscribe to the aforementioned energy concept, those who embrace the concept of universal knowledge in relation to the sixth sense believe it allows us to access the past, present and future knowledge of the all-knowing Universe that is not bound by constraints like linear time. In this sense we are all able to make more appropriate or advantageous life decisions because we're all blessed with some degree of this sixth sense; as such, our primary goal should be to master the interpretation of the simultaneously subtle-yet-obvious cues of intuition.

Can Eyes See Beyond the World?

Over the last several years I always have wondered about, toyed with and believed in our extrasensory perception in relation to my own personal views versus those individuals close to me as well as people in general. We know and read in the media both science and philosophy continuously grow and expand in the advancement of understanding human life. Today most if not all scientists and philosophers agree on the fact a human’s investigation of the world is limited. With saying this the intention is not to belittle humanity’s capability but to point out humanity is basically like a newborn who only feels, says, acts and receives that which comes from the world around him: his experiences. In all our scientific investigations, we are limited by our five senses. The result is any inventions created or those built in the future will be no exception and do not escape the limitations of our five senses. They merely widen the boundaries we associate with our senses. But does it truly end there, or is there a very real possibility that science one day will consider extrasensory perception as a legitimate part of the investigation process?

I realize how difficult it is or basically the impossibility that we struggle with being able to imagine or identify what our senses lack. Namely, what other additional sense we need in order to recognize the true reality around us, and is “my” reality going to be the same as “Jane Doe’s” reality? Do those who have not embraced the idea of a sixth sense or believe in its validity feel no lack for this, as we feel no lack of a sixth finger on our hands? That for which we feel no lack can never be something to which we would come to request, right? Therefore, all the investigations of our world are only according to our five senses, and thus we cannot begin to see, feel or understand what is beyond these five senses. These are the limitations of our conceptions. Following along this line of thought, if our imagination is the product of our five senses and the experiences that form them, how is it possible for us to ever imagine any object or creature that does not resemble that which is familiar to us from our five senses?

Sixth Chakra and Intuition

According to yogic philosophy, the sixth chakra (or the third eye, as it is commonly called) connects us to our higher self. Our intuitive powers are based on whether or not this chakra is functioning properly. In simple terms, if the third eye chakra is blocked or restricted, our intuitive voice gets muffled.

To balance this chakra you can use yogic, crystal therapy, hypnosis, aroma therapy, simple meditation techniques and/or positive affirmations.

Dreaming in Color?

Over the last year I have introduced different concepts, theories and meanings that can come from your dreams. One we’ve not covered is decoding the meaning of colors in your dreams; that is, understanding some basic color indicators can help you delve deeper into the meaning of your dream and how it applies to you.

Colors have a lot of symbolic and hidden meanings; if a particular color stands out in your dream, it means your subconscious is trying to communicate an important message. The following is a list of some of the most common colors and their general interpretations.

Test Your Intuition

You may have come across several articles, blogs and videos telling you to trust your intuition, but how exactly do you start trusting it if you aren’t even sure if such a thing as intuition exists? The answer lies in experimenting on your own and figuring out just how strong your intuitive powers are. I thought I would share a few simple “tests” or “experiments” to help you increase the trust you have in your own inner voice and wisdom.

Coin Flipping
This really is one of the simplest ways to build trust in your intuition. Flip a coin and try to guess its result. Go by your gut feeling and make a note of all the times you were right as well as…

The Science of Intuition

Instinct, gut feeling, intuition: all of us have had moments when a hunch has proved correct, only to wonder later whether it really was intuitive brilliance on our part or just a lucky coincidence. After all, intuition is a just “acquisition of knowledge without using rational reasoning and logic,” right? Perhaps not!

If certain research studies are to be believed, intuition is probably an amalgamation of past data, increased sense of observations and a skill to look beyond the obvious and the reality.

According to research, intuition really is the result of our brain’s information processing mechanism. Several other research studies have also put forward similar theories.

How to Use Your Intuition

It’s easy to say things such as “listen to your gut feeling,” “pay attention to your intuitive guidance,” “listen to your inner voice,” etc. But the perplexing questions are, “How do you know what your gut feeling is?” “How do you identify the voice of your intuition?” And most importantly, “how should you go about using it?” After my own 30-plus years of learning to listen, I thought I would share a few tips regarding what I know and what has worked with my clients as they are learning to “listen.” I always refer to this as “Embracing Your Inner Wisdom!”, and it is what I encourage everyone to be doing no matter where they may be on their self-discovery and empowering journey.”

Psychic Pets?

We’ve all heard stories about the psychic and even telepathic powers of pets. The most recent and well-known situation reported in The Register on July 26, 2007, by Lester Haines was the cat predicting the deaths of over 25 senior citizens in a nursing home. (Read about that here.) In most cases we hear through the web of conversations of the more common ones of pets having premonitions of accidents or illnesses involving their owners, knowing when their owners are on their way home, acting strangely before natural disasters, finding their way home despite getting lost miles away, etc. There has been a lot of debate whether such stories about pets are indicators of their psychic powers or are simply the result of their sensitivity and exaggerated claims by doting owners.

Skeptics explain pets’ telepathic connections with their owners by pointing to the sharp observation skills animals possess. The slightest twitch of a muscle or the subtle change of their owner’s body odor could alert pets to a sudden attack or fit. This argument, however, doesn’t explain stories of pets having premonitions about accidents or other untoward events involving their owners.

Intuition and Body Talk

Can our body really talk? Can it actually react intuitively to situations and people? The answer is yes! All you need to do is pay close attention and you will be able to hear and interpret the subtle language of your body’s signals and signs while learning its unique language.

How to Listen to Your Body
Awareness, faith and practice are what you need to understand the intuitive guidance of your physical body. Our bodies react to the energies around us, and if you pay close attention you will notice your body feels relaxed when you are surrounded by natural beauty. People often tend to feel calm and at peace when they visit a place of worship. Similarly, places with negative energy—for instance, an old prison, fort or castle rooms that have been witness to torture or murder—tend to create feelings of discomfort in our body.
